"Dostana" is the latest film from Karan Johar and Tarun Mansukhani (director). It's a non-rhona-dhona film that KJ has made. While it releaseed a month ago, I have seen it twice already! And, I enjoyed it just as much the second time as the first.

The masala film stars Abhishek Bachan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra. It's young, modern, witty, sexy and funny. The music is bumpin' - or should we Bouncin' by Vishal Shekhar.

"Dostana" has all the ingredients for great Bollywood cinema - fun, friendship, sexiness, comedy, romance, music and the beach. Set in Miami, its the story of two hot guys pretending to be gay for an apartment and find themselves room mates with hot Neha.

It's been awhile since a comedy of this calibre has come out of Bollywood. Abhishek and John's performance as two gay men were outstanding. Abhishek presented the stereotypes of a gay man with perfection and John was pure comedy as the "hairless wonder." The chemistry of the three lead characters - Neha, Sam and Kunal - is cozy. But, for me the chemistry and camaderie between Abhishek and John is what makes the film a laugh riot. And, I believe it was these two who carried the film on their shoulders.

There were several scenes where I was on the floor laughing!! The "maa da ladla" number; how they first met; and, the KKKG scene. I don't want to give away too much for those that haven't seen the film yet!

Priyanka looks gorgeous in her Bo Derek inspired gold swimsuit. John made great eye candy as the "hairless wonder". Abhishek, noted to have been carrying a family pack lately, looks cool and confident as always.

KJ presented homosexuality with the same wit, humor and sexual inneuendo as "Kantaben" from Kal Ho Na Ho. While this film brought the topic of homosexuality to the forefront, it did not bring the topic of homosexuality in the South Asian community to the discussion table. Critics and gay activitists have argued that KJ did not do justice to the gay community. However, we must remember that KJ does not make films based upon social issues, but rather masala films which push the envelope. And, he must be credited for that.

In Dostana, it was sexuality. In KANK, it was finding your soulmate after being bound to marriage. In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, it was friendship and love. In KKKG, it was family.

For viewers wanting a real look at homosexuality in the Desi community, I would recommend either the film Fire or My Brother Nikhil. They are both non-commercial films that focus upon homsexuality.

What did you think of Dostana? What are your thoughts about the desi gay community? Post here or email me at desigirlhouston@gmail.com
