Salwaar Kameez Tips

I was looking for outfit ideas for upcoming weddings and came across this. I thought you might find it helpful as well!! I adapted some of their rules based upon current trends, but you can see the original post at http://www.bargello.com/salwar_kameez_tips.asp.

- The kameez should be a little longer in height. It makes you look taller. If your height is around 5 feet 3 inches then your kameez height should be around 47- 48 inches.
- If you have broad shoulders then avoid wearing puffed sleeves. If you are uncomfortable in sleeveless, then go for sleeves of about 5 inches length. This will hide the flab on your arms and your hands will look thinner.
- Churidar looks good on long kameezs or Kurtas. Avoid wearing them on short Kurtas. A churidar with a short kurta top can make your lower half look bigger.
- Chinese collar (closed neck) makes you look tall, but avoid it if you have broad shoulders.
- Wear a Salwar Kameez around your naval area, as it will pull in your stomach. If you have the tie strings on your side, it reduces the look of the paunch.
- Avoid Organza or any stiff cloth if you want to look slimmer.
- Wear colors that flatter your skin tone - shades of pink, purple, maroon complement all desi girls.
- Use colour to balance your body. Wear light colours where you're small and dark colours where larger. For example, if you have large hips, wear dark skirts or pants and a light coloured blouse. Wearing one uniform color is also very slimming.
- Don't choose clothes that are too tight. Clothes that fit well will make you appear slimmer while tight clothes will only add pounds.
- Clothes in solid colours with simple lines will make you appear taller.
- Always break in new shoes before wearing them out for a special occasion. And, please don't wear chunky heels - go for the stillettos or kitten heels.
- Wear straight silhouettes in a solid colour to hide a thick waist.
- The skinner the stripes, the thinner you appear.
- A straight cut skirt and full leg pants will hide large thighs.
- To lengthen your legs wear slim, straight leg pants.
- When you are wearing a white kameez, wear a bra close to your skin colour.
- To hide wide hips, try an a-line style dress.
- When accessorizing, don't mix gold and silver. Keep either the earrings or the necklace as the focus of the attention, not both. Add choodiyan that pick up the colors of you outfit.

Remember desi girls, your Tashaan and beauty are not solely based on the clothing or outfits that you wear, but are a complete package made up of your confidence, your grace, your charm and your humility. Your outfit, accessories and make-up only enhances your natural beauty, shows your personality, and brings out your Tashaan.

What do you think of these style tips for wearing a Salwaar Kameez? Are there any tips that I've forgotten? What are some fashion faux pas' that you've seen in desi clothes? Post on the blog or email me at desigirlhouston@gmail.com.
